General Hammond summons Colonel Jack O'Neill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. O'Neill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, O'Neill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality.
A secret military team, SG-1, is formed to explore other planets through the recently discovered Stargates.
Stargate boasts some of the greatest special effects on TV for a science fiction show. The show looks beautiful and the sets are incredible. The negative about this show is the acting of Amanda Tapping and the writing. Michael Shanks is terrific as Daniel Jackson, Christopher Judge is fantastic as T'ealc and surprisingly Richard Dean Anderson is very good as O'Neil. Tapping is the weak link in this show–her acting is cardboard style and her expressions are the same each and every show. The writing is lacking big time. The writers should have looked at the work on Farscape (one of the best written shows in Sci-Fi) and Firefly (the best post-Star Trek show ever made). Each and every show (that the team goes on a ship) they are captured–each and every show Daniel or Sam allows an enemy to access data and improve themselves. It is highly annoying that a character "supposedly" as brilliant as Samantha Carter would continuously allow enemy characters to improve themselves by allowing them access to SG technology. No military commander would ever allow that to happen. The other big annoyance is the way each and every character is a high ranking officer. As ex-military you would NEVER EVER EVER see people of that rank on these LURP (SG) team in the field. These fields would be led by a lower officer or a sergeant. No team would have a Colonel and a Major on a four man squad. The effects are spectacular–but the writing is sub-par.
Stargate SG-1 should seriously be considered one of the greatest shows ever created. The characters are so likable, and develop over the length of the series into complex, deep people. Even a thief and con artist, such as Vala Mal Doran, becomes someone that the audience cares for.<br/><br/>This show has the perfect combination of suspense, action, and even comedy. It has so many different story lines and problems that intertwine throughout the episodes. This show ranges from hilarious to tragic and everything in between. A show wouldn&#39;t last for ten seasons unless it was absolutely brilliant, as was Stargate SG-1. If you have any doubts or hesitations as to watching it, push them aside; you won&#39;t regret it.<br/><br/>And yes, for the majority of planets the team travels to, the people there speak English. It was a decision the creators had to make, or the characters would spend half the episode trying to just communicate. It doesn&#39;t take away from the show at all. In fact, if the majority of aliens visited didn&#39;t speak English, I think the show would be inferior to what it is now. The audience can just enjoy the storyline rather than be confused over languages.

It should also be noted that there are a few episodes where there is a language difference and communication does not come easily, such as when Daniel encounters the Unas.<br/><br/>The produces first realized this may be an issue when starting the show, so they discussed the fact that the first time an indivdual uses the Stargate the &quot;Gate&quot; would automatically Internally inplant a microscopic universal translator to somewhere in the brain so thus any travelers would be able to comunicate with other Alien Individuals, however it can tranlate most but not all languages and dialects, but this was decided that a &quot;true&quot; fan would not pay attention to this minor detail and even went as far to make a joke about it in the episode &quot;Wormhole X-treme&quot;. So if you are not happy with this you have two options (1) dont watch the show, (2) get a life and stop the negative attitude and trying to ruin the show for others… The show is purely for Entertainment value and not reality &quot;so take a chill pill&quot;. taken from http://www.savedanieljackson.com/history/originalspirit/cine.shtml<br/><br/>Ive been playing the same character for a long time, says Shanks. I felt that the character was a regular and should be utilized like that. I thought that would be appropriate, but I felt that wasnt going to be the case. I was going to become a useless actor on that show. I felt that I should move on and do something else as an actor, so I decided to leave. But, adds Shanks carefully, our disagreement about the course of the show is not related to the wonderful years I have worked with these people. These people are great. <br/><br/>After doing 2 guest appearances during season 6 &quot;Abyss&quot; and &quot;The Changeling&quot;, he realised that he really liked working there and missed it, and was brought back in the last episode of season 6 &quot;Full Circle&quot;
